Knicks Go, undefeated in three starts last year for Louisville trainer Brad Cox, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s $3 million, Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park.
The Maryland-bred Knicks Go, who will be ridden by Joel Rosario, drew the No. 4 post position in a full field of 12 for the fifth annual Pegasus World Cup. Post time is set for 5:34 p.m., and the race will be televised live by NBC.
Previously trained by Ben Colebrook, Knicks Go was on the 2019 Kentucky Derby trail after finishing as the runner-up to Game Winner in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs.
The whole concept is rather simple. Place a bet of at least £1 on any World Cup market. If it wins and is the wager with the biggest odds, BetVictor will award the £1,000,000 jackpot. There is a separate daily prize pool of £5,000 for 25 matchdays during the World Cup. The rules are similar, but only the bets for the particular day count.
But Knicks Go finished no better than fourth in his first three races of 2019 and missed the Kentucky Derby. After a 10th-place finish in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf on Nov. 9 at Churchill, owner Korea Racing Authority moved Knicks Go to Cox’s barn for the 2020 season.

The son of Paynter won his first start for Cox last February at Oaklawn Park but then was sidelined for 7 ½ months with a minor ankle injury. Retirement was considered, but options opened when Knicks Go returned in October and won a third-level allowance at Keeneland by 10 ¼ lengths in a track-record 1:40.79 for 1 1/16 miles.
“His performance was very impressive off the layoff,” Cox said. “I thought, ‘Well, it’s going to be five weeks back,’ and there was no guarantee he’d even get in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. We were looking toward that race or the Clark at Churchill Downs. We said, ‘Let’s see what happens with the Dirt Mile. He really loves Keeneland.’’
Knicks Go made it in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile field on Nov. 7 at Keeneland and went off as the 9-5 favorite. He won with a track-record time of 1:33.35.
On Saturday, Knicks Go had his final workout for the Pegasus, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Fair Grounds.
“He was really good – well, well within himself,” Cox said. “He galloped out in 1:14. The rider was very, very happy with him; we were happy with him. He’s as ready as he’s going to get.”
Cox is one of three 2020 Eclipse Awards finalists for Outstanding Trainer, along with Steve Asmussen and Bob Baffert. The Cox-trained Monomoy Girl is among the finalists for Horse of the Year, joining Authentic and Improbable. Winners will be announced Jan. 28.
