There were 512 entrants to the main event. Each paid $10,000 to enter the tournament. The 2000 Main Event was the first time the total entries of the Main Event surpassed 500 players.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) began a new series of online Circuit Events in 2021. The plan is to host 13 online series throughout the year, once each month plus a championship event. During that time, more than 180 gold rings will be awarded.
With the first month of the year coming to an end, so did the WSOP Circuit January Super Series, which catered to a combined 8,653 entrants and awarded $3,080,707 over its 18 events.
Among the recognizable names to capture rings were Toby ’DustPistons’ Lewis, Daniel ’centrfieldr’ Lupo, Katie ’azulciel’ Stone, Alexander ’jinyang’ Butcher, Jasthi ’vkjasthi’ Kumar, and Chris ’Robotbob47’ Moorman, who actually defeated his wife in heads-up play to get the job done.

The 2002 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament involved 65 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men’s NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 12, 2002, and ended with the championship game on April 1 in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome.

Florida seems to be a hard team to prognosticate this season. It’s definitely inconsistent, but at its best, it can knock off some of the nation’s top teams (such as West Virginia, who it beat on the road). Because of this, NCAA Tournament projections vary greatly in their placement of the Gators.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has the Gators as a No. 8 seed, while CBS Sports currently has them as a No. 6 seed. The latest bracket from Sports Illustrated has been released, and it’s slightly more negative on UF than either of those.
On the SI bracket, Florida is listed as a No. 9 seed, slotted to take on Big Ten opponent Maryland, the No. 8 seed in its region, in the First Round. If the Gators survived what would be a tough first matchup, the road wouldn’t get any easier, as it would almost certainly draw top-seeded Baylor in the Round of 32. Five other SEC teams appear in the field: No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Arkansas, No. 5 Tennessee, No. 6 Missouri and No. 9 LSU. They’re all in different regions than UF, so it wouldn’t face any of them until the Final Four.

Myron Medcalf: I don’t see a metric that supports Steph Curry advancing past Maya Moore. Curry had a brilliant collegiate career and played his way into the first round after averaging 25.3 PPG during his three years at Davidson. It was clear he had the ability to produce for the best teams in the country. But Moore actually did that. She played with two first-team All-Americans (Tina Charles, Renee Montgomery) and still stood out. She’s a two-time Wooden Award winner. She ended her career as a top-five scorer in women’s basketball history. Curry made a lot of shots at Davidson but not as many as Moore, who shot 52.5% from the field compared to Curry’s 46.7% mark. She won two national titles, played in four national title games and finished with a 150-4 record. C’mon. Moore was Kobe in college.
I get that most folks are voting based on overall achievements (Moore wins that competition too), but the gap -- 63.4% for Curry and 36.6% for Moore -- doesn’t make sense. Moore is one of the greatest players of all time. And she made a bigger impact at the collegiate level.
Jeff Borzello: In my breakdown of the Midwest region, I pegged Steph Curry as my upset pick and Chris Webber as my underappreciated player, so I won’t say I’m surprised by either one of those players advancing. I am surprised, however, by two things that will also be addressed in the next section. Christian Laettner, one of the greatest college basketball players of all time, barely made it past 16-seed Jimmer Fredette, and Zion Williamson beat Danny Manning fairly handily. Jimmer had a great couple of seasons and was must-watch TV for pretty much every college basketball and sports fan, but Laettner won two national championships and won the Final Four Most Outstanding Player award in 1991. Fredette won three NCAA tournament games in four years. Meanwhile, Zion was a never-before-seen player who had one of the most dominant single seasons we’ve seen and was arguably the favorite going up against Manning, but I expected it to be closer. Manning had one of the great tournament runs when he carried Kansas to the 1988 national championship and was a three-time All-American.
Andrea Adelson: I am beyond disappointed that not one women’s basketball player made it past the first round, considering the world-class players that voters had to choose from on this side of the bracket. If I had to pick one as the biggest surprise, then it is Chris Webber over Cheryl Miller. Perhaps recency bias played a role here too, but if anybody looked at their careers on their merits alone, they would understand Miller tops Webber in virtually every category that counts: She won more national championships (two), had a higher career scoring average and broke down barriers for women’s players everywhere. Also, Webber’s two Final Four appearances were later vacated -- that should have counted for something.Ncaa Bracket Round Of 32There’s going to be some Duke-on-Duke crime in the round of 32, with the Laettner vs. Zion matchup taking center stage. How would you, personally, go about comparing a guy who had a brilliant four-year collegiate career vs. a transcendent, dominant one-and-done? Who has your vote?
Medcalf: My guess is Zion Williamson will win this vote and win by a significant margin, in part because his college performance is so fresh but also because there is an army or Laettner haters in their 30s, 40s and 50s who still want to see him lose. Did you see some of the comments after CBS showed the Duke-Kentucky game that featured The Shot? It’s as if it happened yesterday for them. They’ll vote against them. Meanwhile, Williamson is one of the most popular collegiate players we’ve ever seen.
If it’s about overall achievements, then I’ll pick Laettner every time. He wasn’t just great. He was a legend. But if it’s about ’Who would you want on your team?’ then give me Williamson. Yes, he played for a year. But you could make the case that he had one of the most dominant (75% mark inside the arc) efforts we’ve ever witnessed. My guess is Mike Krzyzewski would have picked Williamson too. After Williamson’s first game last season, Coach K said, ’I’ve never had anyone like him.’ Give me Williamson in the upset here.
Borzello: Given the way the voting in the first round went, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the 1-seed Laettner go down. But personally, I would lean Laettner. Yes, Zion would have the better highlight reel and his single-season numbers were tremendous -- but Laettner’s body of work across four years has few peers. Four Final Fours, two national championships, one Final Four Most Outstanding Player and a National Player of the Year (with those two awards coming in different seasons, for what it’s worth), and he was a two-time All-American. He played in 23 NCAA tournament games; he won 21 NCAA tournament games. Those are numbers that will likely never be reached again. While Zion will have better dunks, Laettner has his fair share of iconic moments: the shot to beat Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional final (and a 31-point performance in which he never missed a shot) and the shot to beat UConn in the 1990 East Regional final. Eighteen points and 10 rebounds to beat Kansas in the 1991 final and 19 points and seven rebounds to beat Michigan in the 1992 title game. Laettner just has more on his résumé.
Adelson: If we are comparing Laettner and Williamson on talent alone, then Williamson is the easy winner. But if we’re talking about all-time NCAA tournament performer, then Laettner is the easy winner. Yes, we all know how many people despised him during his Duke career (after all, there is an ESPN doc called ’I Hate Christian Laettner’), but close your eyes and think about the most iconic NCAA tournament moment in your mind. Chances are, it’s Laettner with his buzzer-beater against Kentucky. He won two national championships and still holds the NCAA tournament records for total points. Obviously he played longer than Williamson, but it’s hard to argue with just how dominant Laettner was come tournament time.Apart from Laettner vs. Zion, what’s the second-round matchup from this side of the bracket that you find the most intriguing, and why?
Medcalf: I’m definitely interested in the Wilt Chamberlain-Bill Walton matchup. Chamberlain did ridiculous things at Kansas. He averaged 29.9 PPG and 18.3 RPG during his two seasons with the Jayhawks and he would have led the nation in blocks if the stat had been recorded when he played. He was the 1957 NCAA tournament’s Most Outstanding Player even though Kansas lost to North Carolina that year. But if you tweeted right now that Walton was the greatest college basketball player of all time, who could strongly disagree with that claim? It’s like Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and then everyone else. Chamberlain was a one-of-a-kind talent. But Walton was the anchor of a UCLA squad that’s perhaps the greatest team we’ve seen at that level.
Borzello: Man, there are some interesting ones. Melo vs. Trae Young should be fun, but give me Mullin vs. Magic. Given Magic’s winning margin in round one, I’m not sure it’ll be close, but it should be. Mullin was named to All-American teams three years in a row, he won the Wooden Award in 1985 and was the Big East Player of the Year three straight years. St. John’s also went to the Final Four in 1985. Magic won the national championship in 1979, with his Michigan State Spartans beating Larry Bird and Indiana State -- but he didn’t have the individual college accolades of Mullin.Ncaa Bracket Round Of 32 Inch
Adelson: David Thompson vs. Stephen Curry. Given the voting patterns in the first round, I wonder whether Curry will get the nod based on his NBA career and his current relevance. A younger generation of basketball fans outside North Carolina might not even remember Thompson. But they absolutely should. Thompson, whom some regard as the greatest player in ACC history, averaged 26.8 points in his career, and helped NC State upset UCLA in the 1974 NCAA tournament en route to the national title. He was voted voted Most Outstanding Player.

Jeff Borzello: In my breakdown of the Midwest region, I pegged Steph Curry as my upset pick and Chris Webber as my underappreciated player, so I won’t say I’m surprised by either one of those players advancing. I am surprised, however, by two things that will also be addressed in the next section. Christian Laettner, one of the greatest college basketball players of all time, barely made it past 16-seed Jimmer Fredette, and Zion Williamson beat Danny Manning fairly handily. Jimmer had a great couple of seasons and was must-watch TV for pretty much every college basketball and sports fan, but Laettner won two national championships and won the Final Four Most Outstanding Player award in 1991. Fredette won three NCAA tournament games in four years. Meanwhile, Zion was a never-before-seen player who had one of the most dominant single seasons we’ve seen and was arguably the favorite going up against Manning, but I expected it to be closer. Manning had one of the great tournament runs when he carried Kansas to the 1988 national championship and was a three-time All-American.
Andrea Adelson: I am beyond disappointed that not one women’s basketball player made it past the first round, considering the world-class players that voters had to choose from on this side of the bracket. If I had to pick one as the biggest surprise, then it is Chris Webber over Cheryl Miller. Perhaps recency bias played a role here too, but if anybody looked at their careers on their merits alone, they would understand Miller tops Webber in virtually every category that counts: She won more national championships (two), had a higher career scoring average and broke down barriers for women’s players everywhere. Also, Webber’s two Final Four appearances were later vacated -- that should have counted for something.Ncaa Bracket Round Of 32There’s going to be some Duke-on-Duke crime in the round of 32, with the Laettner vs. Zion matchup taking center stage. How would you, personally, go about comparing a guy who had a brilliant four-year collegiate career vs. a transcendent, dominant one-and-done? Who has your vote?
Medcalf: My guess is Zion Williamson will win this vote and win by a significant margin, in part because his college performance is so fresh but also because there is an army or Laettner haters in their 30s, 40s and 50s who still want to see him lose. Did you see some of the comments after CBS showed the Duke-Kentucky game that featured The Shot? It’s as if it happened yesterday for them. They’ll vote against them. Meanwhile, Williamson is one of the most popular collegiate players we’ve ever seen.
If it’s about overall achievements, then I’ll pick Laettner every time. He wasn’t just great. He was a legend. But if it’s about ’Who would you want on your team?’ then give me Williamson. Yes, he played for a year. But you could make the case that he had one of the most dominant (75% mark inside the arc) efforts we’ve ever witnessed. My guess is Mike Krzyzewski would have picked Williamson too. After Williamson’s first game last season, Coach K said, ’I’ve never had anyone like him.’ Give me Williamson in the upset here.
Borzello: Given the way the voting in the first round went, I wouldn’t be shocked to see the 1-seed Laettner go down. But personally, I would lean Laettner. Yes, Zion would have the better highlight reel and his single-season numbers were tremendous -- but Laettner’s body of work across four years has few peers. Four Final Fours, two national championships, one Final Four Most Outstanding Player and a National Player of the Year (with those two awards coming in different seasons, for what it’s worth), and he was a two-time All-American. He played in 23 NCAA tournament games; he won 21 NCAA tournament games. Those are numbers that will likely never be reached again. While Zion will have better dunks, Laettner has his fair share of iconic moments: the shot to beat Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional final (and a 31-point performance in which he never missed a shot) and the shot to beat UConn in the 1990 East Regional final. Eighteen points and 10 rebounds to beat Kansas in the 1991 final and 19 points and seven rebounds to beat Michigan in the 1992 title game. Laettner just has more on his résumé.
Adelson: If we are comparing Laettner and Williamson on talent alone, then Williamson is the easy winner. But if we’re talking about all-time NCAA tournament performer, then Laettner is the easy winner. Yes, we all know how many people despised him during his Duke career (after all, there is an ESPN doc called ’I Hate Christian Laettner’), but close your eyes and think about the most iconic NCAA tournament moment in your mind. Chances are, it’s Laettner with his buzzer-beater against Kentucky. He won two national championships and still holds the NCAA tournament records for total points. Obviously he played longer than Williamson, but it’s hard to argue with just how dominant Laettner was come tournament time.Apart from Laettner vs. Zion, what’s the second-round matchup from this side of the bracket that you find the most intriguing, and why?
Medcalf: I’m definitely interested in the Wilt Chamberlain-Bill Walton matchup. Chamberlain did ridiculous things at Kansas. He averaged 29.9 PPG and 18.3 RPG during his two seasons with the Jayhawks and he would have led the nation in blocks if the stat had been recorded when he played. He was the 1957 NCAA tournament’s Most Outstanding Player even though Kansas lost to North Carolina that year. But if you tweeted right now that Walton was the greatest college basketball player of all time, who could strongly disagree with that claim? It’s like Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and then everyone else. Chamberlain was a one-of-a-kind talent. But Walton was the anchor of a UCLA squad that’s perhaps the greatest team we’ve seen at that level.
Borzello: Man, there are some interesting ones. Melo vs. Trae Young should be fun, but give me Mullin vs. Magic. Given Magic’s winning margin in round one, I’m not sure it’ll be close, but it should be. Mullin was named to All-American teams three years in a row, he won the Wooden Award in 1985 and was the Big East Player of the Year three straight years. St. John’s also went to the Final Four in 1985. Magic won the national championship in 1979, with his Michigan State Spartans beating Larry Bird and Indiana State -- but he didn’t have the individual college accolades of Mullin.Ncaa Bracket Round Of 32 Inch

The son of Paynter won his first start for Cox last February at Oaklawn Park but then was sidelined for 7 ½ months with a minor ankle injury. Retirement was considered, but options opened when Knicks Go returned in October and won a third-level allowance at Keeneland by 10 ¼ lengths in a track-record 1:40.79 for 1 1/16 miles.
“His performance was very impressive off the layoff,” Cox said. “I thought, ‘Well, it’s going to be five weeks back,’ and there was no guarantee he’d even get in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. We were looking toward that race or the Clark at Churchill Downs. We said, ‘Let’s see what happens with the Dirt Mile. He really loves Keeneland.’’
Knicks Go made it in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile field on Nov. 7 at Keeneland and went off as the 9-5 favorite. He won with a track-record time of 1:33.35.
On Saturday, Knicks Go had his final workout for the Pegasus, breezing five furlongs in 1:00.60 at Fair Grounds.
“He was really good – well, well within himself,” Cox said. “He galloped out in 1:14. The rider was very, very happy with him; we were happy with him. He’s as ready as he’s going to get.”

The stale original is boring for younger generations of casino-goers that have grown up playing interactive games on their smartphones. Casinos recognize that, to capture the attention of this market, they have to evolve the slot machine from the insert-a-token, pull-a-lever, and hope-for-fortune model.
One industry observer has suggested that the enthusiasm behind skill-based slots is “a sign of the casino industry’s destiny—sort of Bellagio meets Dave and Buster’s.” This may be true, and the future proliferation of skill-based slots might not be limited to places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Because the outcome of skill-based slots are, as the name implies, based on players’ skill, they may not be prohibited by the gambling laws of certain states.
Florida is not one of those states. Florida explicitly prohibits skill-based slots that pay out cash or other things of value. Florida Statute § 849.16 defines slot machine as “any machine or device . . . [that] may be operated and if the user, whether by application of skill or by reason of any element of chance or any other outcome unpredictable by the user, may: (a) Receive or become entitled to receive any piece of money, credit, allowance, or thing of value.” In addition, the State’s gambling laws and broad statutory definition of “slot machine” have created a very fine line between arcade games, like those offered at Chuck E. Cheese’s, and illegal slot machines.
The Palms II internet café of Ocala, Florida recently found itself on the wrong side of that line. Last December, a state court ordered the Palms II to cease operating video game machines that the State Attorney had deemed to be illegal slot machines. Order Granting Final Summary Judgment, Let’s of Ocala II, LLC v. Brad King et al., No. 15:2648-CA-G (Fla. Cir. Ct. July 13, 2016). The game in question involves two stages. In the first, a randomized “loot wheel” spins on the screen; where it lands dictates the potential points the player can win. In the second stage, the player attempts to click on ducks flying across the screen—much like Nintendo’s classic Duck Hunt. Successful players win points that are redeemable for cheap merchandise on-site. No cash equivalent is offered for the points.
The Palms II challenged the State Attorney’s determination in court, arguing that the games were skill-based and more akin to arcade games than illegal slot machines. The Circuit Court of Marion County disagreed, granting summary judgment against the Palms II. According to the court, the game constituted illegal gambling under Florida Statutes § 849.08 and § 849.16. Section 849.08 makes it a crime to play or engage “in any game . . . of chance, at any place, by any device whatever, for money or other thing of value.” As noted above, Section 849.16 defines illegal slot machines as machine-based games that contain “any element of chance or any other outcome unpredictable by the user.” The court found that the “loot wheel” at the outset of the game qualifies as an element of chance prohibited by the statutes. For the same reason, the court found that the games are not protected by under Florida’s Family Amusement Games Act—the statute enacted to protect arcade games like those at Chuck E. Cheese’s and Dave and Buster’s.
Because Florida expressly prohibits skill-based slots, the court’s decision doesn’t have significant implications on the burgeoning industry. The decision does, however, highlight the potential complications that will arise as the industry grows amidst ill-fitting gaming laws. The skill-based slot machine industry is coming; states will need to be prepared with correspondingly modernized gaming laws and regulations.

With the entire tournament taking place in or near Indianapolis, there is no reason for the four geographic regions that have been a part of past NCAA brackets. The NCAA doesn’t have to ensure the best teams play closer to home.
The NCAA instead is trying to use the “S curve” in which a team’s placement is more dependent on its strength than its location. The No. 1 overall seed ideally would have the No. 8 overall seed as the second-best team in its region, the top No. 2 seed in the same section with the No. 7 overall seed and the same approach for 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5.
Whether that happens isn’t a sure thing: Rules prevent conference rivals from facing off early in the tournament and the S curve — the NCAA helpfully put out a specific explanation of this term — often gets broken up.
“The likelihood of being able to be a perfect S curve is probably unlikely,” said Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart, who chairs the NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee. “There’s going to have to be modifications.”

“This is just an unprecedented tournament, an unprecedented time,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said. “Hopefully it’s only a one-off and we’re only going to have to do this and navigate this one time this way.”
THOSE CONFERENCE MATCHUPS
Teams from the same conference can’t meet before the regional final if they’ve already played each other at least three times in a season. If they’ve faced off twice, league foes can’t meet until the regional semifinals.
Some of this is already being played out. For instance, when the committee revealed last week which schools would earn the top 16 seeds if the bracket were being announced that day, No. 4 overall seed Ohio State was included in a region with No. 14 seed Texas Tech, rather than No. 13 seed Iowa. Ohio State and Iowa already met once, are scheduled to face off again Feb. 28 and could battle each other a third time in the Big Ten Tournament.
No. 8 overall seed Houston was in a region with No. 3 overall seed Michigan rather than No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga. Plenty of other pairings also didn’t quite match what a true S curve would have reflected.
LACK OF NONCONFERENCE GAMES
Division I teams played fewer than half as many nonconference games as usual this year. That makes it tougher than ever to compare the credentials of teams from various leagues.
It also could make it particularly challenging for teams from outside the major conferences to land at-large bids. Typically, contenders from those leagues build their resumes by beating schools from bigger leagues. Those schools didn’t get nearly enough of those opportunities this year.
Barnhart said the biggest challenge is the fact that pandemic-related pauses have caused some teams to play fewer games than others through no fault of their own. There’s also the dilemma of how to rate a team that might lose a game or two due to the rust factor after a long layoff.
“There is no hard-and-fast rule,” Barnhart said. “I think the thing we’ve got to understand is, we’re going to play the ball as it lies. The resumes are the resumes.”
HOW LOW IS TOO LOW?March Madness Bracket Scoring Rules
Up to now, no team has ever earned an at-large bid with a worse record than the 16-14 mark that Villanova had in 1991 and Georgia had in 2001.
That could change this season, because the pandemic limited the number of so-called guarantee games that allow major conference teams to boost their records.
Jerry Palm, who forecasts the NCAA brackets for CBS Sports, said a team could make it this year while being only one or two games above .500 as a possibility. Joe Lunardi, who predicts the bracket for ESPN, believes even a team with a losing record could get an at-large bid.
Finding a team that fits that profile is tricky. Maryland (13-10) was an obvious candidate before the Terrapins won three straight games to pull above .500.
The highest-rated team with a losing record in the NET rankings is Penn State (7-10). The Nittany Lions dealt their NCAA hopes a severe blow by falling to Michigan State and Nebraska in their last two games. They lost to Ohio State 92-83 on Thursday night, but an upcoming matchup with Iowa - ranked 11th in the AP Top 25 - give them a chance to raise their stock.March Madness Bracket Template

“It diminishes the effect of the home-court advantage, so to speak,” Barnhart said. “But I never want to lose sight of the fact the team has to test to get on the bus or play, they’ve got to travel, they’ve got to stay in a hotel, they’re out of their element, they’re playing in an area they aren’t used to, all those things.”
Through Sunday, home teams had won 65.9% of Division I games, not far off last season’s pace of 68.4%.

The William Hill App, available from the App Store, makes it possible to get William Hill radio on your mobile device.
